JEE Main 2026 Overview
Conducting Body:
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main has been conducted by the National Testing Agency
(NTA) since 2019.
Objective:
The JEE Main Examination is administered for two main
● Admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programs (B.E./B.Tech.) for NITs, IIITs, CFTIs
and other institute/universities financed, recognized by the Govt. of India.

Eligibility Criteria for JEE Main 2026
Nationality Requirements
There are a lot of candidates eligible for JEE Main 2026 (not just Indian citizens). More specifically:
- Eligible Indian Nationals.
- Moreover, Foreign Nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO)
and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) are also eligible to take the examination.
As this suggests a lot of eligibility capabilities, this allows various students from a mix of backgrounds and countries to be considered for engineering and architecture programs in India.
Educational Qualification
Candidates must have met the educational qualifications to be eligible for JEE Main 2026:
- Candidates must have cleared their Class 12 (or equivalent) examination either in 2024 or 2025 or must be taking the qualification exam in 2026.
- The qualifying exam must have been administered by a recognized board or a university.
The following are accepted as valid qualifying examinations (QEs) by the NTA for JEE Main eligibility:
- Class 12 (10+2) exam from recognized Central or State Boards like CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education), CISCE (Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations), etc.. or equivalent.
- Pre-University Examination (Intermediate or two-year course) from recognized State or Central Boards or Universities.
- Final examination of Joint Services Wing of National Defence Academy, this is considered equivalent to Class 12.
- Senior Secondary School Examination of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) (with minimum completion of five subjects).
- A Vocational Higher Secondary Certificate Examination issued by Boards.
- Diploma (minimum three years) from an AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) or State Technical Boards recognized program who are looking for admission to an engineering program.
- This is to be applied to JEE Main for the purpose of admissions.
A certificate of equivalence from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) will be needed from candidates who have qualified in Class 12 (or equivalent) outside of India or from boards not mentioned by the NTA. This is proof that their qualification is equivalent to the Indian model of Class 12.
Additionally, if the qualification exam is not a public exam, the candidate will have to have passed at least one recognized public (board or pre-university) exam prior to qualifying for the exam.
Subjects Required
For candidates appearing in Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), the subjects in which study was undertaken in the qualifying exam must include:
- Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
- Additionally, one of the following: Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or Technical Vocational subject.
For candidates qualifying for Paper 2A (B.Arch) or 2B (B.Planning) still needs the subjects they needed or just mainly, Mathematics and Mathematics related subjects based on the course they are trying to qualify for.
Number of Attempts Allowed
Candidates are permitted to take the exam a total of three times, and they must be in consecutive years. For example, if you take the exam in 2024, you can take it again in 2025 and 2026; you cannot take it again after that.
This cap encourages students to dedicate effort into preparing and plan their attempts in a reasonable manner.
Age Limit
For JEE Main, there is no upper age limit. Aspirants of any age, provided they satisfy the educational qualifications can attempt the JEE Main.

NTA JEE Main 2026 Answer Key
The National Testing Agency (NTA) will publish the official answer keys for JEE Main 2026 online after each exam session, typically within 1 week after the exam date.

What is JoSAA?
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) was set up by the Ministry of Education to manage admissions across 119 top engineering institutes in India. These include:

Frequently Asked Questions.
Candidates who have passed or are about to appear (or able to) Class 12 exam (or equivalent)
from recognized boards, in 2024, 2025, or in 2026, can apply. Candidates from various
backgrounds, including Indian citizens, NRIs, PIOs, OCIs, and foreign citizens, can apply. There
are no age restrictions, and candidates are limited to three attempts in consecutive years
JEE Main consists of Paper 1 for B.E./B.Tech (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) and Paper 2
for B.Arch (Mathematics, Aptitude and Drawing) and B.Planning (Mathematics, Aptitude and
Planning). The exam is computer-based and consists of MCQs and numerical-type questions.
Negative marking applies to MCQs only for wrong answers.
You can sit for JEE Main up to three times in consecutive years. For instance, if you sit for JEE
