But most students and many parents are confused about what each one is, how they are connected, and how hard each one actually is.

The Mathematical Olympiad Pathway in India — A Quick Overview

In India, the journey from a school Mathematics student to an International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) participant happens through a structured 6-stage selection process — managed by HBCSE (Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education) on behalf of the National Board for Higher Mathematics.

The six stages are:

  1. IOQM: Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics
  2. RMO: Regional Mathematical Olympiad
  3. INMO: Indian National Mathematical Olympiad
  4. IMOTC: International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp
  5. PDC: Pre-Departure Camp
  6. IMO: International Mathematical Olympiad

IOQM is the entry point. IMO is the destination. RMO is the bridge between the two.

Each stage is significantly harder than the previous one. Each stage also changes in format — from numerical answers to full proof-based solutions. Understanding these differences is essential before you begin preparing.

Stage 1: IOQM (Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics)

What Is IOQM?

IOQM is the first stage of India’s Mathematical Olympiad program. It replaced the earlier PRMO (Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad) system in 2021 to create a single, unified national qualifying examination.

IOQM 2026 is scheduled for 6 September 2026. It is conducted by MTAI (Mathematics Teachers Association of India) in coordination with HBCSE.

Who Can Appear?

Students from Class 8 to Class 12 from recognised schools across India. Indian citizens and OCI cardholders are eligible. There is no minimum percentage requirement — only age and class conditions apply.

Exam Format

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Questions: 30 integer-type questions (no MCQs, no negative marking)
  • Marking: 10 questions × 2 marks, 10 questions × 3 marks, 10 questions × 5 marks
  • Total marks: 100
  • Answer range: Each answer is an integer from 00 to 99

How Many Students Qualify?

Students who score above the regional cutoff qualify for RMO. Approximately the top 5% to 10% from each region advance.

How Hard Is IOQM?

IOQM is significantly harder than school Mathematics but it is numerical, not proof-based. The best comparison: IOQM tests whether you can find the right answer to an Olympiad-level problem. You do not need to write a formal proof. You just need the correct integer.

Stage 2: RMO (Regional Mathematical Olympiad)

What Is RMO?

RMO is the second stage of India’s Mathematical Olympiad selection. It is conducted region-wise — each state or group of states forms a region. HBCSE oversees RMO through Regional Coordinators.

RMO 2026 is scheduled for 15 November 2026.

Who Can Appear?

Only students who qualify for IOQM can appear for RMO. There is no separate registration — qualification from IOQM makes you eligible.

Exam Format

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Questions: 6 proof-based problems
  • Format: Fully subjective — students must write complete mathematical proofs
  • Total marks: Not fixed — each question is graded on the quality of reasoning

How Many Students Qualify?

Top 30 students per region from Category A (Class 8 to 11) qualify for INMO. Top 6 students per region from Category B (Class 12) qualify for INMO. Additionally, the top 5 girl students also qualify under the girls’ quota in Category A.

How Hard Is RMO?

This is where the difficulty jumps significantly.

IOQM asks you to find an answer. RMO asks you to prove why your answer is correct in a rigorous, step-by-step mathematical argument. A correct answer without a valid proof gets zero marks. An incorrect answer with brilliant reasoning gets partial credit.

This shift from answer-finding to proof-writing is the biggest challenge for students moving from IOQM to RMO.

Stage 3: INMO, IMOTC, PDC, and IMO

INMO: Indian National Mathematical Olympiad

INMO is the national stage. Only approximately 600 students across India qualify to write INMO each year. The exam is 4.5 hours long with 6 proof-based problems — harder than RMO. INMO 2027 is scheduled for 17 January 2027.

IMOTC: Training Camp

The top 35 students from INMO are invited to the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp at HBCSE, Mumbai. This is a month-long intensive residential program — April to May 2027. The Government of India covers all travel and accommodation expenses.

PDC: Pre-Departure Camp

After IMOTC — 6 students are selected to represent India at IMO. They attend a final Pre-Departure Camp before the international competition.

IMO: International Mathematical Olympiad

The IMO is the world’s most prestigious mathematics competition for pre-university students. Held annually — India has been participating since 1989. Two contest days. Six problems. Pure mathematical creativity at the highest level.

At IMO — India competes against teams from over 100 countries. The entire cost for India’s team is borne by the Government of India.

How to Prepare for IOQM

IOQM is about numerical problem-solving not proofs. Your goal is to find correct integer answers to non-routine problems in Number Theory, Algebra, Geometry, and Combinatorics.

What to study:

  • NCERT Mathematics Class 8, 9, 10 thoroughly
  • Number Theory divisibility, modular arithmetic, primes
  • Algebra polynomials, quadratic equations, sequences
  • Geometry triangle theorems, circle theorems, coordinate geometry
  • Combinatorics counting principles, Pigeonhole Principle

How to practice:

  • Solve previous year IOQM and PRMO papers 2014 to 2026
  • Practice under timed conditions 3 hours
  • Maintain an error notebook every wrong answer, every missed concept
  • Target 18 to 22 correct answers per paper before appearing for IOQM

How to Prepare for RMO

RMO demands proof-writing. This is a completely different skill from IOQM problem-solving — and it takes time to develop.

What changes from IOQM to RMO:

  • You must write complete, rigorous mathematical proofs
  • Partial reasoning earns partial credit, but incorrect logic earns nothing
  • Problems are harder and more creative; they combine multiple topic areas in one question

What to study:

  • Advanced Number Theory: Fermat’s Little Theorem, Chinese Remainder Theorem, Diophantine equations
  • Advanced Geometry: Ceva’s Theorem, Menelaus’ Theorem, power of a point, projective methods
  • Advanced Combinatorics: graph theory, recursion, advanced counting
  • Proof techniques: mathematical induction, contradiction, construction proofs

How to practice:

  • Solve RMO past papers 2010 to 2026, attempting every problem for at least 20 minutes before reading the solution
  • Study model solutions and understand exactly how the proof is structured
  • Write your own proofs from scratch, not just read existing ones

Can a Class 8 student appear for IOQM?

Yes. Students from Class 8 to Class 12 are eligible for IOQM provided they meet the age and citizenship criteria set by HBCSE. Class 8 and 9 students who appear for IOQM get valuable early experience and those who clear it have extra years to prepare for RMO and INMO.

Does IOQM and RMO preparation help with JEE Advanced?

Absolutely. Olympiad preparation builds deep mathematical thinking, logical reasoning, and non-routine problem-solving skills exactly what JEE Advanced demands. Students who clear RMO or INMO consistently outperform peers in JEE Advanced Mathematics.
