Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)

Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)

The Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO) is the second stage of India’s Mathematical Olympiad program for students aiming for the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). Its aim is to identify young mathematical talent, to enhance the ability to solve problems and to develop logical thinking across the nation.

At Origin Educare, we have the mentorship, study materials, and expert guidance to help your child clear RMO with confidence. With our structured way of learning, aspirants learn advanced mathematical concepts and develop the skills required to apply the concepts to solve challenging mathematical Olympiad type problems.

What is the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)?

RMO is a three-hour formal test with six challenging problems. Unlike regular tests, RMO focuses on proofs and logical reasoning rather than solely providing an answer, requiring students to show depth of understanding and cognitive ability.

The RMO is conducted by Regional Coordinators under the oversight of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE). Once the aspirants clear the RMO, they will then be eligible for the next prestigious stage, the Indian National Mathematics Olympiad (INMO), which eventually leads the aspirants toward the IMO and EGMO.

Exam date: The RMO 2025-26 will be held on November 9, 2025 as per the HBCSE notification.

Stages of the Mathematical Olympiad Program

Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) is the second of six stages in the Mathematical Olympiad process. The stages are as follows:

  1. Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics (IOQM) – An entry-level examination for students of classes 8-12.
  2. Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) – A three-hour unique examination consisting of six problems (subscholar entrants could join for a maximum of 30 students for the round).
  3. Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO) – A four-hour unique examination for RMO qualifiers and INMO merit students.
  4. International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) – A month-long camp at HBCSE, only for INMO awardees.
  5. Pre-departure training camps – Are presented to the final IMO and EGMO team members prior to their departure for team-training.
  6. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) – The highest level of international competition which allows highly talented young mathematicians to represent their countries.

    • Top 30 students from each region are selected for INMO.
    • In case of a tie, IOQM scores will be considered.
    • Even if their ranking is lower, the top 5 girl students will also qualify under the girl’s quota.

  • Category B: Students of Class 12.

    • In this category, the top 6 students from each region will qualify for INMO.
    • No separate girl’s quota will be applied.

RMO 2025 Syllabus

The syllabus will include all topics of NCERT Mathematics of Class 8, 9, and 10, along with advanced topics. It is subject wise as follows:

1. Algebra

  • Inequalities
  • Progressions (A.P, G.P, H.P)
